THE new owner of the Newcastle's Kensington Theatre site is pursuing plans to turn the former cinema into a nightclub.

The Hunter Street property was auctioned in March after the previous owner went into administration last year.

The sale came with a 2004 development approval to convert the 530 square metre premises to a nightclub.

An application to modify the plans is now with Newcastle City Council.

Documents lodged by Byrnes PDM said the proposed amendments included changing the number of internal levels from three to two, removing a lift and redesigning bathrooms, staircases and ancillary rooms.

The application said the changes were aimed at improving the building's function as a nightclub.

The establishment would operate with a licence from the former Jolly Roger nightclub.
