AFTER successful seasons of this year's Oscar-winner for best picture, No Country For Old Men, and the Oscar-nominated Atonement and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Greater Union is beefing up the arthouse credentials of its Newcastle cinema with a season of arthouse films at discount admission prices.

The Critic's Selection season begins today with the anti-Iraq war drama In The Valley of Elah, written and directed by the Oscar-winning director of Crash Paul Haggis and starring Tommy Lee Jones in his Oscar-nominated performance.

Tickets to Critic's Selection films are $9.50.

Other films screening as part of the season include the Naomi Watts period drama The Painted Veil (opens April 24), the Dennis Quaid comedy Smart People (April 24), romantic comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day starring Enchanted's Amy Adams (May 8) and the shark documentary Sharkwater (May 15).
